Chap. 534.——An ACT for the relief of Mrs. Blanche M. Shifflett. {S 132]
Approved April 6, 1948
Whereas, in- March nineteen hundred forty-six, Albert Walker
Shifflett was committed to the Western State Hospital in Staunton,
Virginia, in the manner provided by law; and
Whereas, following his commitment Mr. Shifflett was attacked and
brutally beaten by certain attendants of the Western State Hospital, as
a result of which Mr. Shifflett died leaving a widow, Mrs. Blanche
M. Shifflett, and twelve children, most of whom are totally dependent
upon their mother ; and
Whereas, Mrs. Shifflett has no recourse against those responsible
for the death of her husband (who were tried and convicted of the
crime of manslaughter), since the attendants have no resources whatever ;
and
Whereas, it is only fitting that the State of Virginia seek to recom-
pense in part Mrs. Shifflett for her loss which she suffered through no
fault of her own or of her husband ; Now, Therefore
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. There is hereby appropriated out of the general fund of the State
treasury, the sum of one thousand dollars to be paid to Mrs, Blanche
M. Shifflett, which sum, if accepted by her shall be in full and: final
settlement and discharge of any and all past and future claims by or
on behalf of said Blanche M. Shifflett and the children of Albert Walker
Shifflett on account of the matters and. things aforesaid.
