Chap. 149.—An ACT to Incorporate the Franklin Toll Bridge across
Staunton River, in the Counties of Campbell and Halifax.
Approved March 8, 1878.
Whereas, the bridge across Staunton river known as Pan-
nill’s bridge, was in April, eighteen hundred and sixty-five, de-
stroyed by fire; and whereas, James Franklin being the owner
of the land and franchise did on the fifteenth day of Novem-
ber, eighteen hundred and seventy-two, re-build the bridge on
the old site:
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That it shall be
lawful for the said James Franklin, his heirs or assigns, to own
and hold the said bridge as a toll bridge. |
2. That it shall be lawful for the said James Franklin, his
heirs or assigns, to demand and receive the following tolls
or rates for passing said bridge, that is to say: for a one horse
vehicle with two wheels and driver, twenty-five cents; for a one
horse vehicle with four wheels and driver, thirty cents; for a:
two horse vehicle with four wheels and driver, thirty-five cents;
for a three horse vehicle with four wheels and driver, forty cents ;
for a four horse vehicle with four wheels and driver, forty-five:
cents; for a five horse vehicle with four wheels and driver,
fifty cents; for a six horse vehicle with four wheels and driver,.
fifty-five cents, and for all passengers accompanying same,.
each five cents; for foot passengers, each five cents; for horses,
mules and cattle, each five cents; for each hog, sheep or goat,
one cent; for horse and rider, ten cents, and for other things
not herein mentioned, in lke proportion; said rates to be
posted at each end of said bridge.
3. That if the collecor of the tolls at the said bridge shall
demand and receive from any person greater rates than are
hereby allowed, he shall for every such offence forfeit and pay
to the party aggrieved, the tolls demanded and received, and
ten dollars, recoverable with costs before any justice of the
peace of the county of Campbell.
4. That it shall not be lawful for any person or persons to
erect any bridge or establish any ferry either one mile above
or below the said bridge.
5. The general assembly reserves the right hereafter to re-
vise and alter the rates of toll prescribed above.
6. This act shall be in force from its passage.
