Chap. 134.—An ACT to amend Chapter 16, as amended, of the Acts of Assembly
of 1924, approved February 13, 1924, which provided a charter for the town
of Edinburg, by adding a new section numbered 4-b, relating to election and
terms of office of mayor and town council. {H 325]

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That chapter sixteen, as amended, of the Acts of Assembly
of nineteen hundred twenty-four, approved February thirteen, nine-
teen hundred twenty-four, be amended by adding a new section
numbered four-b as follows:
Section 4b. Notwithstanding any other provision of this char-
ter at the election to be held on the second Tuesday of June, nine-
teen hundred forty-eight there shall be elected by the qualified
voters of the town of Edinburg, a mayor and six councilmen. The
person receiving the highest number of votes shall be elected mayor
to hold office for the term of four years. Of the six members elected
to the council on the second Tuesday in June, nineteen hundred
forty-eight, those three members receiving the highest number of
votes shall hold office for a term of four years. The other three
members shall serve for a term of two years. In case of tie among
any of the members lots shall be cast among those tying to deter-
mine which one or ones shall hold office for the term of four years.
On the second Tuesday of June, nineteen hundred fifty, and each
two years thereafter there shall be elected by the qualified voters
of said town three councilmen whose term of office shall be for
four years and the person receiving, successively, the highest num-
ber of votes in each election at which a mayor is to be elected shall
be elected mayor. At the first meeting of the council after their
election they shall appoint such officers for the town as are provided
for by this charter.
2. An emergency exists and this act is in force from its passage.
