Chap. 256.—An ACT for the relief of Oscar R. Mundy. [H B 238]
Approved March 25, 1946
Whereas, in the month of May, nineteen hundred thirty-six, after
an order had been entered by the circuit court of Orange, in a proceed-
ng instituted by the Commonwealth of Virginia, condemning certain
real estate of William and Cora Wills, two negroes, located near Orange,
n said county, they barricaded themselves in their house on the prop-
erty, and refused to submit to such condemnation, when W. B. Young,
sheriff of the county, attempted to enter their house to enforce the order
of condemnation, he was shot and killed by one of them; whereupon, M.
M. Myers, deputy sheriff, appointed Oscar R. Mundy as a special deputy
to assist in the enforcement of the order ; and,
Whereas, when Mr. Mundy rushed forward and was dragging
Sheriff Young’s body away from the house, he was shot in both the arm
and shoulder by one or both of the negroes, as a result of which, he was
laid up in a hospital for a total of five weeks, and incurred heavy ex-
penses for hospitalization and medical treatment, the total of which ex-
penses, together with the value of the time lost by him on account of such
injuries, amounted to approximately seven hundred dollars ($700.00) ;
and,
Whereas, it is deemed fitting and proper that Mr. Mundy be com-
pensated for the loss so suffered by him; now, therefore,
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. There is hereby appropriated to Oscar R. Mundy the sum of
seven hundred dollars ($700.00), the same to be paid to him by the
State Treasurer on the warrant of the Comptroller, out of any funds
in the State treasury not otherwise appropriated.
