Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. That whenever any prisoner confined in the State Penitentiary,
State Convict Road Force, or at any State owned or operated penal farm
or institution shall attempt to escape, the officer, guard or overseer in
charge of such prisoner may use such means as may be reasonably nec-
essary to prevent the escape of such prisoner.
