Chap. 30.—An ACT for the relief of J. M. Arrington. [H. B. 62]

Whereas, J. M. Arrington, a deputy for Sheriff J. J. Noffsinger of
Botetourt County, while on official duty as such deputy sheriff in the
month of February, nineteen hundred forty-four in such county, dis-
covered two escaped convicts attempting to break into a filling station
at Troutville, Virginia, gave chase and finally arrested such convicts,
but was overpowered by them and seriously injured in attempting to
prevent their escape ; and .
"Whereas, because of injuries sustained by Mr. Arrington in the
performance of his duties he incurred hospital and medical bills amount-
ing to two hundred forty-six dollars and two cents; and
Whereas, it seems proper that the Commonwealth of Virginia should
reimburse this officer for these expenses incurred by him in a necessary
and dangerous public duty ; now, therefore,
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia :
1. That the Comptroller is authorized and directed to issue his
warrant on the Treasurer of Virginia in favor of J. M. Arrington for
the sum of two hundred forty-six dollars and two cents, and the Treasurer
of Virginia shall pay the amount of such warrant out of any funds in
the State Treasury appropriated for the payment of criminal charges.
Chap. 31—An ACT to provide for buildings and equipment and other betterments,
at the Southampton Penitentiary Farm at Capron, and to appropriate aa
therefor. [H. B. 12]

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That out of the moneys appropriated by this act the State Board
of Corrections is authorized and empowered to provide new buildings and
equipment, and other betterments, at the Southampton Penitentiary Farm
at Capron, and there is hereby appropriated for said purpose to the
State Board of Corrections the sum of six hundred and fifty thousand
dollars ($650,000). It is provided, however, that all items for which
said sum may be expended shall be first approved by the Governor.
