Chap. 31.—An ACT to provide for the recordation by clerks of courts of counties
and cities, in a book or books to be designated “Induction and Discharge Record,
World War II”, of certain information relating to residents thereof who are
serving or have served in the armed forces of the United States in World War
II, and to prescribe how the expenses of such recording shall be paid. [S 60]

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. Section 1. The clerk of every circuit or corporation court, in
whose office deeds may be admitted to record, shall request and obtain
from the chairman of each draft board in his county or city a list or lists
of all the residents of such county or city who, under the Selective Service
Act or by voluntary action, have been or shall hereafter during the con-
tinuance of the present World War II be inducted into the armed forces
of the United States. The list or lists shall contain the name and address,
personal description, and the branch of the service into which the resi-
dent was inducted, together with the grade or rank at the time of induc-
tion. Supplemental lists shall be obtained until all such members of the
armed forces have been included therein.
Section 2. Upon receipt of the list of the clerk shall record the in-
formation contained therein into a record book kept for the purpose, and
known as “Induction and Discharge Record, World War IT’, under the
heading “‘Induction Record”. |
Section 3. Such record book shall be kept in the clerk’s office as a
public record and shall be paid for by the county or city, as other public
record books are paid for. It shall be standard loose leaf construction,
suitable for permanent record purposes, and shall consist of a binder with
canvas jacket, an index, and a quantity of sheets printed to provide space
ior (1) the induction record, (2) the service record, and (3) the dis-
charge. Under (1) shall be provided suitable headings and space for
recording the induction information obtained from the draft boards, and
under (2) and (3) shall be provided suitable headings and space for
recording the information contained in the discharge papers.
Section 4. When the honorable or dishonorable discharge of any
person who served in the armed forces of the United States, or its asso-
ciates, during World War II and who was a resident of the county or
city at the time of his induction, is presented, it shall be the duty of the
clerk to record the information contained therein in the proper spaces
provided for such purpose in the book known as “Induction and Dis-
charge Record World War II’. If the induction record of the veteran
presenting a discharge for recordation is not already recorded, it shall
be the duty of the clerk to ascertain this information and record it along
with the discharge.
Section 5. The clerk shall be entitled to and paid from the funds oi
his county or city the fees allowed by law in similar cases, for copying in
the Induction and Discharge Record, World War II, the information
obtained from the draft boards, but in no case shall any charge be made
the resident who has served in the armed forces for recording his dis-
charge papers.
