Chap. 419.—An ACT for the relief of Carolyn Canada Boelte. [S B 282}
Approved April 4, 1942
Whereas, on the eighteenth day of December, nineteen hundred and
thirty-eight, Herbert August Boelte, a deputy sheriff of Halifax county,
while attempting to arrest Willie Bradshaw, a negro, on a warrant
charging him with a felony, for which he was thereafter tried, convicted
and electrocuted, was shot and killed by said Bradshaw ; and,
Whereas, said deputy sheriff left surviving him, his widow, Carolyn
Canada Boelte, and it is deemed fitting and proper that the Common-
wealth of Virginia should recognize his courageous service and provide
for his widow with at least a part of the support which was taken from
her by the untimely death of her husband, who was so ruthlessly killed
while in the discharge of his official duty ; now, therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia, That there
be paid to Carolyn Canada Boelte, out of any funds in the State treasury
not otherwise appropriated, the sum of twelve hundred dollars, by the
State Treasurer on a warrant issued by the Comptroller.
