Chap. 285.—An ACT to abolish the office of constable, and to terminate the terms
of office of constables, in the counties of the Commonwealth, and to transfer to,
vest in, and impose upon sheriffs of counties the powers and duties heretofore
vested in and imposed upon such constables. [H B 14]

1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia, as follows:
Section 1. The office of ‘constable in the several counties of the
Commonwealth is hereby abolished.
Section 2. The terms of office of all constables in office in the
several counties of the Commonwealth immediately prior to the. date
upon which this act takes effect are hereby terminated.
Section 3. All of the powers vested in, and all the duties imposed
upon, constables in the several counties of the Commonwealth immedi-
ately prior to the date upon which this act takes effect, are hereby trans-
ferred to, vested in and imposed upon, and shall hereafter be exercised
and performed by, the sheriffs of the respective counties.
2. Be it further enacted, That this act shall take effect on January
first, nineteen hundred and forty-three.
