Chap. 317.—An ACT for the relief of Pearson Martin. [S B 309]

Whereas, a certain boat known as the ‘“‘Armstrong”’ and belonging
to the Commission of Fisheries, while on patrol duty in the Chesapeake
Bay on August fifteenth, nineteen hundred and thirty-nine, with
seven passengers and two crew members on board, caught fire by
reason of its imperfect working condition; and
Whereas, one Pearson H. Martin anid his twelve year old son,
Eugene Martin, by heroic effort rescued the said crew and passengers
from the said boat and in so doing suffered severe burns which re-
sulted in the death of the said son and serious suffering and prolonged
disability to the said Pearson H. Martin; and
Whereas, by reason of hospital expenses for the said Martin and
his son, of burial expenses for the said son, of boat equipment burned
in the ‘making of the said rescue and of loss of earnings, the said
Martin incurred and suffered heavy financial loss; and
Whereas, it is deemed fitting and proper that the said Martin be
reimbursed and compensated for the losses so suffered out of funds
in the State treasury credited to the Commission of Fisheries; Now,
Therefore
1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia, That the
Comptroller be, and he is hereby authorized and directed to draw
his warrant on ‘the State Treasurer, in favor of Pearson H. Martin,
for the sum of one thousand dollars, which sum shall be paid to the
said Martin by the State Treasurer upon the said warrant out of any
funds collected and paid into the State treasury by the Commission
of Fisheries and appropriated to the said Commission.
