Chap. 344.—An ACT to Provide forthe Election of Electors of Presidcnt
and Vice-President of the United States.
Approved March 25, 1872.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That the counties,
cities and towns of this commonwealth, shall be divided into
nine electoral districts as follows:
The countjes of Accomack, Northampton, Gloucester,
Mathews, Middlesex, Essex, King William, King and Queen,
Northumberland, Lancaster, Richmond county, Westmoreland,
King George, Stafford, Prince William, Spotsylvania and city of
Fredericksburg, shall compose the first district.
Norfolk city and county, city of Portsmouth, Princess Anne,
Nansemond, Isle of Wight, Elizabeth city, York, Warwick,
James City, city of Williamsburg, Charles City, New Kent,
Sussex, Southampton, Surry and Prince George, shall compose
the second district.
Richmond city, Henrico, Chesterfield, Hanover, Louisa and
Caroline, shall compose the third district.
City of Petersburg, Dinwiddie, Brunswick, Mecklenburg,
Lunenburg, Nottoway, Amelia, Greensville, Prince Edward,
Charlotte, Powhatan and Cumberland, shall compose the fourth
district.
Halifax, Pittsylvania, town of Danville, Henry, Franklin,
Patrick, Floyd, Carroll and Grayson, shall compose,the fifth
district.
Alleghany, Botetourt, Bedford, Rockbridge, Campbell, city
of Lynchburg, Amherst, Appomattox, Buckinghai and Nelson,
shall compose the sixth district. |
Bath, Highland, Shenandoah, Page, Rockingham, Augusta,
city of Staunton, Albemarle, town of Charlottesville, Greene,
Fluvanna and Goochland, shall compose the seventh district.
Frederick, city of Winchester, Clarke, Warren, Loudoun,
Alexandria city and county, Fairfax, Fauquier, Rappahannock,
Madison, Orange and Culpeper, shall compose the eighth
district.
Lee, Scott, Wise, Buchanan, Washington, Russell, Tazewell,
Smyth, Wythe, Pulaski, Bland, Montgomery, Giles, Roanoke
and Craig, shall compose the ninth district.
And the electors shall be elected on the Tuesday after the
first Monday in November, eighteen hundred and seventy-two.
and every fourth year thereafter, as is provided in the act of
assembly passed February twelfth, eighteen hundred and forty-
four, so far as the said act is not inconsistent with the provis-
ions of the constitution now in force. Each voter voting fot
one elector from each electoral district, and in addition, one
from the state at large.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
