Chap. 168.—An ACT to amend Chapter 6 of an act entitled ‘‘An Act to provide a
charter for the city of Petersburg.”, approved March 11, 1875, as heretofore
amended, by adding to said chapter a new section numbered Section 8, provid-
ing for the appointment of a civil and police justice for said city. [H B 384]

1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia, That
chapter six of an act entitled ‘“‘An Act to provide a charter for the
city of Petersburg.’’, approved March eleventh, eighteen hundred and
seventy-five, as heretofore amended, be amended by adding thereto
a new section numbered section eight, which new section shall read
as follows:
Section 8. There shall be appointed by the judge of the hustings
court of the city of Petersburg prior to the first day of January, nine-
teen hundred and forty-two, and every four years thereafter, a civil
and police justice for the said city, who shall hold office for a term of
four years, and whose term of office shall begin on the first day of
January succeeding his appointment. Vacancies in the office of the
said justice shall be filled for the unexpired term by the said judge.
No civil and police justice shall hereafter be elected in the said city
under the provisions of section three thousand and ninety-seven of
the Code of Virginia, but all provisions of the Code of Virginia and
acts of the General Assembly relating to the civil and police justice
referred to in the said section three thousand ninety-seven of the
Code and to his jurisdiction, powers and duties, and to proceedings
in his court shall be, or, when enacted, shall become, applicable tc
the civil and police justice to be appointed as herein provided, and tc
his jurisdiction, powers and duties and to proceedings in his court.
