Chap. 129.—An ACT to amend and re-enact Section 64-a of an act entitled ‘‘An
Act to incorporate the city of Newport News, in the county of Warwick, and
to provide a charter therefor.”’, approved January 16, 1896, relating to certain
juvenile officers. [H B 253]

1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia, That
Section sixty-four-a of an act entitled ‘“‘An Act to incorporate the city
of Newport News, in the county of Warwick, and to provide a charter
therefor.’’, approved January sixteenth, eighteen hundred and ninety-
six, be amended and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
Section 64-a. The city council of the said city may, in its discre-
tion, provide by ordinance for the appointment of a juvenile officer
or officers, male or female, to be appointed by the city manager, who
shall hold office at the pleasure of the city manager of the city of
Newport News, and shall receive such salary as may be fixed by the
council of the said city. Such juvenile officer or officers shall be con-
servators of the peace within the said city and shall have all of the
authority and power now or hereafter conferred by general law on
police officers and on probation officers, and shall perform such other
and further duties as may be required of him or them by the said city
manager, and shall be subject to the supervision and control of said
city manager.
The city manager may designate one of the officers so appointed
as chief juvenile officer and the officer so designated shall have super-
vision over the work of the other juvenile officers under the direction
of said city manager. ,
