Chap. 310.—An ACT to Permit the People of Northumberland County to
Vote on the Disposition of the Glebe Fund.
Approved March 23, 1872.
Whereas, numerous and influential citizens of Northumber-
land county have by petition memoralized the general assem-
bly. that the sense of the people of the said county should be
taken upon permitting the Glebe fund, (amounting to twenty-
five hundred dollars) to be applied to the building of public
school houses:
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia. That
it shall be the duty of the several officers conducting elections
in the county of Northumberland, at the times and “pk wes for
holding the general clection on the fourth Thursday in May,
eighteen hundred and seventy-two, to prepare a separate b: ot
box for each voting precinet, m which shall be deposited the
ballots of the then qualified voters who shat] desire to vote
upon the question of said appheation of the Glebe fund. The
said ballots shall be respectively as follows:
Tor applying the Glebe fund to the brulding of publi school
houses.
Against applying the Glebe fund to the building of public
school houses.
Fach ballot so cast, which shall have written or printed
thereon, * For applying the Glebe fund to the building of pub-
he school houses,” shall be taken and counted as a vote for
applying the Glebe fund to the building of public school
houses; and each ballot so cast, which ‘shall have written
or printed thereon, against applying the Glebe fund to
the building of public school houses, shall be taken and counted
as a vote against said application.
2. ‘The manner of receiving and canvassing the ballots east
at such election of the question of applying the Glebe fand to
the balding of pubhe school houses. and making returns and
abstracts of the results thereof, shall ecouform in all respects to
the regulations prescribed by the @eneral election law of this
state, execpt that the certificate of the Judges of election shall
be as follows:
We hereby certify that at the election held
votes were cast “for applying Glebe fund to the building of
public school houses.” and votes were cast against
applying Gicbe fund to building of public school houses.

And provided further. that the commissioners of election
shall make, on a separate sheet, an abstract of said votes for
and against such appleation, which abstract shall be duly
signed by said commissioners and deposited in the office of the
clerk of the county court of said county.
3. And if from such returns and abstracts of votes, it shall
appear that a majority of the registered voters of said county
have voted in favor of applying the fund to the aforesaid pur-
pose, then it shall be the duty of the county court to enter
upon its records, an order requiring the trustees to apply the
Glebe fund to the building of public school houses; but if 4
majority of the registered voters shall vote against said applhi-
cation then said fund shall continue as heretofore.
4. This act shall be in force from its passage.
