CHAP. 302.—An ACT to amend and re-enact Section 57, and Section 58, as
amended, of Chapter 342 of the Acts of the General Assembly of Virginia
of 1932, approved March 26, 1932, and known, designated and cited as the
Motor Vehicle Code of Virginia, in relation to stopping at scene of acci-
dent, and penalties for failure to stop, render aid and give certain infor-
mation; and to repeal an act entitled “An act prescribing the duties of
operators of motor or other vehicles on public highways who shall injure
any person or property while so driving on said highways, and prescribing
penalties for the violation of this act”, approved March 24, 1922. [H B 472]

1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia, That section
hfty-seven, and section fifty-eight, as amended, of chapter three hundred
und forty-two of the acts of the General Assembly of Virginia of nine-
een hundred and thirty-two, approved March twenty-sixth, nineteen
qaundred and thirty-two, and known, designated and cited as the Motor
Vehicle Code of Virginia, be amended and re-enacted so as to read
is follows:
Section 57. The driver of any vehicle involved in an accident
resulting in injuries or death to any person, or damage to property,
shall immediately stop at the scene of such accident and give to the
person struck and injured, or to the driver or some other occupant of
the vehicle collided with, his name, address, chauffeur’s license number
or operator’s permit number, and the registration number of his vehicle,
and shall render to any person injured in such accident, reasonable
assistance, including the carrying of such injured person to a physician,
surgeon or hospital for medical or surgical treatment if it is apparent
that such treatment is necessary, or is requested by the injured person.
Any person violating this section shall be punished in accordance with
section fifty-eight of this act.
Section 58. Any person convicted of violating the provisions of
section fifty-seven of this act shall, if such accident result in injury to,
or the death of, any person, be punished by confinement in the peniten-
tiary for not less than one year nor more than five years, or by con-
finement in jail for not less than thirty days nor more than one year,
or by a fine of not less than twenty-five dollars nor more than five
thousand dollars, or by both such confinement in the penitentiary or
in jail, and such fine. If such accident result only in damage to property,
the person so convicted shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and
punished in accordance with section forty-seven hundred and eighty-
two of the Code of Virginia.
2. Be it further enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia,
That an act entitled an act prescribing the duties of operators of motor
or other vehicles on public highways who shall injure any person or
property while so driving on said highways, and prescribing penalties
for the violation of this act, approved March twenty-fourth, nineteen
hundred and twenty-two, be, and the same is hereby, repealed.
