Chap. 133.-An ACT to authorize the State Highway Commission to provide
sidewalks and walkways for pedestrian traffic, and to make the provisions
of general law with respect to certain roads and highways applicable to
such sidewalks and walkways. [S B 68]

I. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia, That the
State Highway Commission is hereby authorized and empowered out-
side of cities and incorporated towns to acquire by gift, purchase,
exchange, condemnation, or otherwise, any lands or interests therein
necessary or proper for the purpose, and to construct, improve and
maintain thereon, and on the roads and highways of the State high-
ways systems, such sidewalks and walkways as the said Commission
nay deem necessary for the use and protection of pedestrian traffic
provided the county will pay fifty per cent of the cost thereof.
All the provisions of general law with respect to the acquisition of
ands and interests therein, and the construction, reconstruction, al-
eration, improvement and maintenance of highways in the primary
ind secondary systems of State highways, including the exercise of
he power of eminent domain by the State Highway Commission and
he State Highway Commissioner, shall be applicable to such sidewalks
ind walkways. The State Highway Commission is hereby authorized
ind empowered to expend, out of funds appropriated to the State
dighway Commission, such funds as may be necessary to carry out
he provisions of this act.
