Chap. 81.—An ACT to fix the minimum compensation of civil justices in certain
cities of the Commonwealth, and to prohibit such civil justices from practic-
ing law. {H B 141]

1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia, That in any
city of the Commonwealth having a population of not less than one
hundred thousand nor more than one hundred and fifty thousand ac-
cording to the last preceding United States census, each civil justice
shall receive compensation of not less than five thousand dollars per
annum, and the compensation of such civil justice shall not be de-
creased during his term of office. No such civil justice shall engage
in the private practice of law, provided that nothing herein contained
shall be construed to prevent any such civil justice from completing
any unfinished business he may now be conducting.
Nothing in this act shall be construed to apply to any substitute for
such civil justice. The provisions of this act relating to the salary to
be paid said civil justice shall not be effective during the calendar year
one thousand nine hundred and thirty-six.
