Chap. 221.—An ACT for the relief of Mrs. Thornton Massie. [HB 237]
Approved March 23, 1936
Whereas, on the fourteenth day of March, nineteen hundred and
twelve, the Honorable Thornton Massie, the able and highly esteemed
judge of the Circuit Court of Carroll County, Virginia, was shot down
and killed while courageously engaged in the discharge of his duties
in presiding over said court in the trial of a criminal case pending
therein ; and,
Whereas, after his death his widow has bravely struggled against
the misfortune of being deprived of the support provided by her late
lamented husband, but is now destitute and without adequate means
of support and livelihood; and,
Whereas, it is deemed fitting and proper that the Commonwealth
of Virginia should, in some small measure, demonstrate her apprecia-
tion and gratitude for the courageous service of Judge Massie by
compensating his bereaved widow and relieving her present acute
distress; now, therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia, That the
Comptroller be, and he is hereby, authorized to issue his warrants on
the Treasurer of Virginia in favor of Mistress Thornton Massie as
follows: On July first, nineteen hundred and thirty-six for the aggre-
gate sum of twelve hundred dollars payable in equal monthly install-
ments of fifty dollars, commencing on the first day of July, 1936, and
on the first day of each succeeding month, as an expr ession of apprecia-
tion of his beloved State for the able and courageous service rendered
her by Judge Massie and to relieve the distress of his widow oc-
casioned by his unfortunate and untimely death.
And the Treasurer of Virginia is hereby authorized to pay the said
amounts to the said Mistress Thornton Massie out of the general fund
of the treasury.
