Chap. 289.—An ACT to Amend the Charter of the Town of Culpeper.
Approved March 81, 1871.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That sections four
and six of an act passed June eighth, eighteen hundred and
seventy, entitled an act to change the name of Fairfax to Cul-
peper, and to provide a new charter for the same, be amended
and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
“§ 4, The manicipal authorities of said town shall consist of
a mayor, recorder, and eight aldermen, who shall be elected
annually. The mayor and recorder shall be elected by the
qualified voters of said town, and the voters of each ward
shall elect two aldermen, who must be residents of said ward,
and all persons qualified to vote in said elections shall be eligi-
ble to either of said offices.”
§ 6. There shall be a town sergeant, treasurer, and an asses-
sor of said town, to be appointed by the council, who shall
hold their offices for one year, and the council shall have the
power of removing any or all of said officers in case of mal-
feasance in office or neglect of duty. The council may appoint
such officers and clerks as they may deem proper, in addition
to those herein provided for, and define their powers and pre-
scribe their duties and compensation, who may be removed
from office by the council at its pleasure.”
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
