Chap. 287.—An ACT to Provide for the Collection of Debts Due the City
of Williamsburg, for which Notes were Taken, Payable to the Mayor, Re
corder, and Aldermen, by the Present Corporation of said City.

Whereas by an act of the general assembly of Virginia
passed on the day of , in the year _
certain lands known as the “Glebe lands,” and belonging tc
Bruton parish, of the county of James City and city of Wil.
liamsburg, were authorized to be sold; and whereas the pro.
ceeds of said sale were divided between said county and city.
and were invested in the county court of said county, and in
the hustings court of said city, to be applied to the education
of the poor children of said parish; and whereas the portion
of said fund which passed into the hands of the mayor, re.
corder, and aldermen, as the hustings court of the city of Wil.
liamsburg, was lent out, and bonds taken, payable to the said
mayor, recorder, and aldermen; and whereas the hustings
court of Williamsburg no longer exists, and there is doubt
as to whether the persons who borrowed said money, and gave
their bonds for the same to the mayor, recorder, and aldermen
aforesaid, can properly pay their indebtedness under the exist-
ing state of things; therefore,
1, Be it enacted by the general assembly, That any persons
indebted, by bond or otherwise, to the late mayor, recorder,
and aldermen of the city of Williamsburg, may, and they are
hereby required to pay the same to the present corporation of
said city; and said corporation is authorized to collect said
debts, and to disburse the fund arising therefrom, so as to pro-
mote the purposes for which it was held by the mayor, recorder,
aud aldermen aforesaid.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
