Chap. 387.—An ACT to provide for the erection of a monument to commemorate
the distinguished service of the Major General Fitzhugh Lee to the United
States, the Confederate States, the Republic of Cuba and the State of Vir-
ginia. {S B 363]

Whereas, it is proposed to erect, in the city of Richmond, in the
State of Virginia, under the auspices of the United Spanish War
Veterans, a monument commemorating the distinguished service of
Major General Fitzhugh Lee, a gallant officer in the Confederate
army, later a governor of this Commonwealth, minister to Cuba under
the administrations of Presidents Cleveland and McKinley, and who
was made a major general of volunteers in the United States army
during the war with Spain.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the sum
of five thousand dollars be, and is hereby, appropriated, from the treas-
ury of Virginia, to be taken from funds not otherwise appropriated, to
be available when the United Spanish War Veterans shall have turned
over to the governor of Virginia, the sum of fifteen thousand dollars.
2. When the sum of fifteen thousand dollars has been turned over
to the governor of Virginia, by the United Spanish War Veterans, he,
the governor, shall then appoint a committee, of which he shall be chair-
man, composed of not less than three members of the United Spanish
War Veterans, to be nominated by the Virginia division of that organi-
zation, and three other interested Vi irginians, who shall select a suitable
memorial, for the purpose herein mentioned, to be placed at such point,
in the city of Richmond, as shall hereafter be determined.
