Chap. 240.—An ACT to Incorporate the Otter Bridge Company.
Approved March 29, 1871.
Whereas the bridge known as the Big Otter bridge across
Big Otter river, in the county of Bedford, on the New Lon-
don and Rocky Mount turnpike, was destroyed by the great
flood of eighteen hundred and seventy; and whereas George
G. Saunders and John F. Hurt have heretofore, under a gene-
ral law of this state and under the action of the county court
of Bedford county, become the owners, for a limited term of
years, of the franchises of the section of said road lying in the
county of Bedford, and being such owners, have proceeded to
rebuild, and are now rebuilding, said bridge; therefore,
1, Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the said George G. Saunders and John F. Hurt, and such per-
sons as may hereafter be associated with them, shall be and they
are hereby incorporated and made a body politic and corpo-
rate, under the name and style of The Otter Bridge Company,
for the purpose of building, managing, and controlling said
bridge across Big Otter river, in the county of Bedford, on the
New London and Rocky Mount turnpike road; and are hereby
invested with all the privileges and powers conferred on such
bodies, politic and corporate, and subject to all the restrictions
and limitations imposed on such corporations by the laws of
Virginia.
2. Said company may demand and receive, for crossing said
bridge, the following tolls or rates: for every horse, mule, or
work ox, three cents; for all riding carriages, wagons, or carts,
five cents for each horse, mule, or ox drawing the same; for
every head of neat cattle, and for every hog, sheep, goat, or
lamb, one cent; and said company shall have all the rights
and remedies for the collection of said tolls, and be subject to
all the restrictions provided by the general laws of this state:
provided, that said company shall have no right to collect any
tolls under this act, after the thirty-first day of December,
eighteen hundred and eighty-one: and provided further, that
said company shall have no right to collect any tolls under this
act, so long as they shall’ be allowed by the county court of
Bedford county to hold the franchises of that section of the
New London and Rocky Mount turnpike which lies in the
county of Bedford.
3. This act shall be in force from its passage.
