Chap. 321.—An ACT to provide for a special police force for the county of
Fairfax, appointment and compensation. [H B 395]

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the
sheriff of the county of Fairfax, if deemed advisable, may appoint spe-
cial policemen for so much of said county as is not embraced within
an incorporated town located in the county, who shall be a suitable and
discreet person, or persons, and who shall serve as such for such length
of time as the order of court, approving such appointment, shall desig-
nate, but not exceeding one year under any one appointment. The
appointment of any policeman, as herein provided, shall have the ap-
proval of the circuit court of the said county, or the judge thereof in
vacation, and which approval shall be made a matter of record upon
the proper order book.
2. Before any person shall be appointed a policeman hereunder, he
shall be a qualified voter, and an actual resident of the county of
Fairfax.
3. Such person or persons so appointed shall be conservators of the
peace. Compensation may, subject to the approval of the board of
supervisors of said county, be allowed such policemen, not to exceed
the rate of fifteen hundred dollars per year, to be paid out of the gen-
eral county fund, which compensation shall be fixed by ,the sheriff,
subject to the approval of the circuit court of the said county, or the
judge thereof in vacation.
4. If any policeman is appointed, as provided herein, upon the
application of any person, firm or corporation, operating any indus-
trial establishment, or place of entertainment, or amusement, and for
the sole purpose of protecting such establishment or place of enter-
tainment or amusement, in said county, the compensation of such
policeman shall be paid by the person, firm or corporation applying for
the appointment. No policeman appointed and serving, as in this sec-
tion is provided, shall be deemed to be the employee of the State, or
county, within the meaning of the Virginia workmen’s compensation
act.
5. All policemen appointed, as provided for herein, shall be remov-
able by the sheriff making the appointment at his pleasure.
6. All acts or parts of acts in conflict with this act, be, and the
same are, hereby repealed so far as they relate to the county of Fairfax.
