Chap. 297.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 6 of the charter of the city
of Williamsburg, as defined by chapter 507 of the acts of the general assem-
bly of Virginia, approved March 17, 1884, and as amended by an act of the
general assembly of Virginia, approved March 5, 1900. [H B 314]

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That section
ix of the charter of the city of Williamsburg, as amended, be amended
ind re-enacted so as to read as follows:
Section 6. The said mayor and members of the council shall each
ve clothed with all the powers and authority of a justice in civil mat-
ers within the corporate limits of the city, and in criminal matters,
ind one mile beyond the same, and shall have power to issue process,
nd hear and determine all prosecutions, cases and controversies, which
nay arise under the jurisdictional powers of justices under State law,
nd under the by-laws and ordinances of the city, impose fines and in-
lict punishments when and wherever they are authorized by the said
yv-laws and ordinances and issue executions for the collection of said
ines; and shall be clothed with the power and authority to appoint a
ivil and police justice for said city, who shall be clothed with the same
ower and authority, and be required to qualify in the same manner
s the mayor and members of the council of said city. Appeals may
be taken to the circuit court of said city from the decision of the
mayor, any member of the council or the civil and police justice, as
herein provided, in both civil and criminal matters in the same man-
ner, upon the same terms, and be tried in the same way as appeals
from the decision of a justice are taken and tried under the general
laws of the State.
The council of said city may provide a salary to compensate such
civil and police justice, and in the event a salary is provided all fees
collected by him shall be paid into the city treasury, for the use and
benefit of the city.
