Chap. 263.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section twenty of chapter one hundred
and sixty-one of the acts of nineteen hundred and eighteen, as amended by
chapter one hundred and thirty-seven of the acts of nineteen hundred and
twenty-three, relating to the charter of the town of Pocahontas, Virgimia.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That section
wenty of chapter one hundred and sixty-one of the acts of nineteen
undred and eighteen, as amended by chapter one hundred and thirty-
even of the acts of nineteen hundred and twenty-three, be amended
nd re-enacted so as to read as follows:
Section 20. The council shall have power to lay and levy a tax,
or the general purposes of said town, on all real and personal property,
hich localities are permitted to tax, in said town, at such rates as
lay be prescribed by said council, not to exceed, however, two dollars
n the one hundred dollars value of all property, and not in conflict
ith the general laws of this State; and in addition thereto, a tax not
xceeding twenty cents on the one hundred dollars valuation of the
roperty, real and personal, in said town, for the bencht of the public
schools thereof, and a poll tax of one dollar and fifty cents on each
male and female resident thereof, over twenty-one years of age, and
the said town, in addition to the special powers herein given, shall
have like powers of distress, levy and sale for the collection of such
taxes as are now given to State officers for the collection of State taxes.
2. All acts or parts of acts in conflict with the provisions of this
act are hereby repealed.
3. An emergency now existing in the said town, this act shall be in
effect from its passage.
