Chap. 177.—An ACT making it unlawful for any person to permit dogs to run at
large in the counties of Lunenburg, Prince Edward, Cumberland, and Chester-
field. [H B 99]

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the board
of supervisors of the counties of I.unenburg, Prince Edward, Cumber-
land and Chesterfield may enact an ordinance declaring it to be unlaw-
ful for any person to permit any dog to run at large in said county
from the fifteenth dav of April to the fifteenth day of August of each
year. For the purposes of this act, a dog shall be deemed to run at
large while roaming, running, or self- hunting off the property of its
owner or keeper and not under its owner’s or keeper’s immediate
control.
2. It shall be the duty of the game warden in said county to enforce
the provisions of this act, and any person who, after having been
notified by any landowner, game warden or other officer of the law that
his dog or dogs are running at large, permits his dog or dogs to run
at large thereafter, shall be deemed to have violated the provisions
of this act, and shall be deemed to be guilty of a misdemeanor and be
subject to a fine of not less than five dollars nor more than twenty
dollars for cach violation.
Provided, however, that dogs securely muzzled in such way as to
prevent the destruction of game, and the nests of birds, shall be exempt
from the provisions of this act.
And the board of supervisors of said county may, if such ordinance
is adopted, rescind or re-enact the same, at its pleasure.
3. An emergency existing, this act shall be in force from its passage.
