Chap. 450.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 2769 of the Code of Vir-
ginia, as amended, concerning the pay of supervisors. [H B 78]

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That section
twenty-seven hundred and sixty-nine of the Code of Virginia, as
amended, be further amended and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
Section 2769. Each member of the board of supervisors shall be
allowed, and paid out of the county levy, a compensation for his ser-
vices in attending the meetings of the board and in discharging such
other duties as may be imposed upon him by law at a rate of not ex-
ceeding six dollars per diem for the time he shall be actually so em-
ployed, and five cents for each mile of travel in going to and returning
from the place of meeting of said board, but no per diem allowance
dollars each per annum and mileage as above provided, and the super-
visors of the county of Shenandoah, with the consent of the circuit
court of said county, may receive as much as one hundred and seventy-
five dollars each per annum, and mileage, as above provided; and the
supervisors of the county of Loudoun with the consent of the circuit
court of said county, may receive as much as two hundred dollars each
per annum and mileage as above provided; and the supervisors of
Elizabeth City county may with the consent of the circuit court of
said county, receive as much as three hundred and fifty dollars each
per annum, in addition to the compensation they would be entitled to
receive under the general provisions of this section, the same to be
paid upon warrants issued by said board on the general county fund of
said county, and the supervisors of Fairfax county may receive as much
as four hundred dollars each per annum.
Purthermore, each member of the board of supervisors of Cum-
berland, Stafford, King George, Isle of Wight, Nansemond, Prince
Edward, Prince William, Northampton, James City, New Kent, Charles
City, York, Warwick, Hanover, Gloucester, scott, Russell, Surry,
Sussex and Prince George and Craig, Madison and Rockingham and
Westmoreland counties may be paid as compensation for his services
in the supervision of the opening and repair of the public roads or
construction and repair of bridges of said counties, not exceeding five
dollars per diem for the time he shall be necessarily so employed. Each
member of the board of supervisors of Rockbridge county, for their
services in the supervision ot the opening and repair of the public roads
or construction and repair of bridges in their several districts, shall
receive six dollars per diem for the time necessarily so employed, and
for their services in the supervision of the general county affairs, they
shall, each receive the sum of six dollars per diem, and in addition
thereto five cents for each mile necessarily traveled in connection with
the supervision of the general county affairs; provided, that the super-
visors of Culpeper county may receive three dollars per day when so
engaged; but no supervisor shall receive for such services compensa-
tion to exceed one hundred and fifty dollars per annum, in addition to
the amount allowed by laws for other services, except that the super-
visors of Rockingham county may receive not exceeding two hundred
and fitty dollars tor such services ; except, further, that the supervisors
ot Rockbridge county may receive as much as five hundred dollars for
their services, in the supervision of the opening and repair of the
public roads or construction and repair of the bridges and for their
services in the supervision of the general county affairs, in any one
year, and may receive more than five hundred dollars for such services
with the consent and approbation of the circuit court of said county,
in addition to the amount allowed by law for other services. In the
county of Augusta any supervisor may, with the consent of the circuit
court, be paid as compensation for his services as assistant to the super-
intendent of roads in the supervision or construction and repair of
public roads or bridges, or for any special duties imposed upon him by
the board of supervisors, at the rate of four dollars per diem tor the
ime actually engaged, with mileage, as provided for regular service,
but this extra compensation shall not exceed the sum of three hundred
dollars per year for any one supervisor, and the supervisors of the
county of Norfolk may receive an amount not exceeding five hundred
Jollars each per annum and mileage, as herein provided.
Any supervisor of Orange county, or of Middlesex county may act
as road commissioner for his district and shall be paid for his services
not more than three hundred dollars per annum. Fach supervisor of
the counties of Buchanan, Mecklenburg, Sussex, Russell and Greens-
ville may, in addition to mileage, receive the sum of eight dollars per
day during the time the boards of said counties are in actual session,
and each supervisor of Pittsylvania county and Hatifax county may
act as road commissioner for his magisterial district in supervising
road construction and maintenance, and may receive as such six dollars
per day for not exceeding fifty days in any one year, and for his services
as supervisor while the board is in actual session, he shall receive
six dollars per day for not exceeding fifteen days for any one year
and mileage as herein provided. But nothing herein shall be con-
strued to prevent the members of the board of supervisors of Franklin
county from receiving compensation for their services, as provided by
an act approved March fourteenth, nineteen hundred and twenty-four,
as amended. Each supervisor of Amherst, Grayson and Alleghany
counties may, in addition to the duties now imposed upon them bv law,
inspect, direct and supervise the locating, altering, building, construct-
tion, repairing and keeping in order the roads and bridges in his magis-
terial district, and shall be allowed and paid therefor, in addition to
his compensation as supervisor as fixed by this act, the sum of six
dollars for each day he shall be actually and necessarily so employed,
not to exceed sixty days in any one year, payable out of the county
road levy fund.
In the county of Madison, each supervisor shall receive three hun-
dred dollars and in the county of Dinwiddie two hundred dollars per
annum, in lieu of a per diem allowance, exclusive of any amount he
may be entitled, as now provided by law, for services rendered in
connection with the opening, and repair of the public roads, or the
construction and maintenance of the bridges in his county. And the
members of the board of supervisors of Pittsylvania county may receive
as their compensation an annual salary not to exceed the sum of fout
hundred and fifty dollars, payable monthly, quarterly or in semi-an-
nual instalments, which salary shall be in lieu of all other compensa-
tion for their services as such and as road commissioners.
Each member of the board of supervisors of Bland county, in addi-
tion to his regular compensation as provided for in this section, shal
receive compensation at the rate of three dollars per day, not to ex
ceed thirty days in any year, for time actually employed by him ir
supervising county and district road work in his district, such com
pensation to be paid each supervisor out of the road funds of his
district.
An emergency existing, this act shall be in force from its passage.
