Chap. 342.--An ACT to amend and re-enact section 869 of the Code of Vir-
ginia, in relation to the agricultural experiment station at the Virginia
Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute, so as to
provide for a survey of the soils of the State, and to appropriate money
to carry out such work. [H B 187]

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That section
eight hundred and sixty-nine of the Code of Virginia, be amended and
re-enacted so as to read as follows:
Section 869. The agricultural experiment station established at
the said college shall be continued, the same to be maintained by such
appropriation as the congress of the United States may make for the
purpose.
For the purpose of continuing a survey of the soils of the State
which was begun by the United States department of agriculture, there
is hereby authorized and directed to be made under the direction and
supervision of the agricultural experiment station of the Virginia
Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute, a com-
prehensive soil survey of the State of such a character and along such
lines as to obtain an inventory of the soil resources of the State and
to determine their adaptability to various crops, forestry and livestock
enterprises in order to promote the utilization of the lands of the State
in the most practical and economical way. It is contemplated that the
said experiment station will make this survey in co-operation with the
United States department of agriculture.
For the purpose of defraying the expenses of the soil survey pro-
vided for in this act, including the cost of making the soil survey, and
publishing the reports, the following sums are hereby appropriated to
the said experiment station out of any funds in the State treasury not
otherwise appropriated: The sum of seven thousand five hundred dol-
lars for the fiscal year beginning July first, nineteen hundred and thirty,
and ending June thirtieth, nineteen hundred and thirty-one; and the
sum of seven thousand five hundred dollars for the fiscal year begin-
ning July first, nineteen hundred and thirty-one, and ending June thir-
tieth, nineteen hundred and thirty-two.
