Chap. 204.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 14 of chapter 395 of the
acts of the general assembly of 1926, to amend and re-enact an act entitled
an act to amend and re-enact an act entitled an act to incorporate the town
of Stanley, in Page county, Virginia, approved February 14, 1909, approved

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That sec-
tion fourteen of chapter three hundred and ninety-five of the acts of
the general assembly of Virginia, session of nineteen hundred and
twenty-six, be amended and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
Section 14. The mayor shall by virtue of his office possess all the
power, authority and jurisdiction of a justice of the peace for Page
county, in all civil and criminal matters within and one mile beyond
the corporate limits of the said town; and shall have exclusive juris-
diction under the ordinances of said town. And in his absence or dur-
ing the temporary vacancy of his office, other members of the council
shall have and exercise the same jurisdiction and authority.
The mayor may, with the approval of the council, entered of record
on the book containing the minutes of the council meetings, appoint
a trial justice for said town, who shall be a citizen of Page county,
and who shall, by virtue of said office, posséss all the power, authority
and jurisdiction of a justice of the peace, and whose term of office
shall be concurrent with that of the mayor. Before entering upon the
discharge of any duty, the person so appointed shall qualify by the
taking and subscribing the oaths prescribed by law for a justice of
the peace, before some officer authorized and empowered to administer
oaths, and a minute thereof shall be entered upon the minute book of
said council. The compensation of such trial justice shall be deter-
mined by the council, and may be paid by the fees collected by him,
or a salary to be fixed by the council, payable out of the town treas-
ury, either or both, or it may be by salary only, in which case the fees
collected by him shall be properly accounted for and turned into the
town treasury.
