Chap. 57.~An ACT to authorize and empower the board of supervisors of the
county of Nansemond and the council of the city of Suffolk to provide for
the remodeling of the present jail and jailor’s house of said county, or for
the erection ‘of a new jail and jailor’s house, same to be jointly owned,
used and maintained by said county and city on such .terms and conditions
as may be agreed upon by said board of supervisors and city council, and
to authorize and empower said board of supervisors and city council to
borrow money and issue bonds or notes for said purposes. [H B 95]

Whereas, the county of Nansemond owns certain real estate in
the city of Suffolk on which is located the county jail and jailor’s
house, which are used jointly by said county and city; and,
Whereas, said jail is insufficient and inadequate for the convenient
accommodation of those who may be confined therein; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the
board of supervisors of said county and the council of said city are
hereby authorized and empowered to provide for the remodeling of
the present jail and jailor’s house of said county, or, if they deem it
advisable so to do, for the erection of a new jail and jailor’s house on
the site of the present county jail, said remodeled jail and jailor’s
house or said new jail and jailor’s house, as the case may be, and the
land reasonably necessary in connection therewith, to be jointly
owned, used and maintained by said county and city on such terms
and conditions as may be agreed upon by said board of supervisors
and city council. The said board of supervisors is authorized and
empowerd to convey to said city an undivided, one-half interest in
said remodeled jail and jailer’s house or said new jail and jailor’s house
and said land, the deed therefor to contain such terms and conditions
as may be agreed upon by the board of supervisors and the city coun-
cil, to be executed on behalf of said board of supervisors by its chair-
man, and to have the seal of said board affixed thereto, attested by
the clerk of said board. The sheriff of said county or the sergeant of
said city shall be the keeper of said jail, as may be determined by said
board of supervisors and said city council.
2. The said board of supervisors and said city council are hereby
authorized and empowered to borrow money for said purposes and to
issue bonds or notes therefor, the bonds or notes issued by said board
of supervisors to be signed by its chairman, and to have the seal of
the board affixed thereto, attested by the clerk of the board, and the
bonds or notes issued by said city council to be so issued and sold in
the manner and under the conditions prescribed by the charter and
ordinances of said city.
3. An emergency existing, this act shall be in force from its pas-
sage.
