Chap. 165.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 3 of an act entitled an act
to provide a new charter for the town of Narrows and to repeal all other acts
and parts of acts in conflict with the provisions of this act, approved March
24, 1920, as amended by an act approved March 15, 1922. {H B 470]

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That sec-
tion three of an act entitled an act to provide a new charter for the
town of Narrows and to repeal all other acts and parts of acts 1n con.
flict with the provisions of this act, approved March twenty-fourth
nineteen hundred and twenty, as amended by an act approved March
fifteenth, nineteen hundred and twenty-two, be amended and re-
enacted so as to read as follows:
Section 3. The town shall have a sergeant, clerk, treasurer, and
such other officers as the council shall deem necessary or proper, all
of whom shall be elected or appointed by the council, and the council
shall prescribe their duties, in addition to the duties required of them
by law; fix their compensation; prescribe penalties for neglect or vio-
lation of their duties; and determine which of them shall give bond,
and fix the penalty thereof. The town shall also have a police jus-
tice, who shall be a qualified voter in the town, and shall be elected
by the qualified voters and at the same time the members of the town
council are elected, and whose term of office shall be the same as that
of the members of the said council. It shall be the duty of the police
justice to try all criminal cases arising under the ordinances of said
town, except that he be absent or legally disqualified, and shall before
entering upon the discharge of his duties, qualify in the same manner
as justices of the peace are required by law to qualify. He shall be
clothed with all powers and authority as a justice of the peace in all
criminal and civil matters, within the corporate limits and to one
mile beyond’ the same and shall have concurrent jurisdiction with
same.
2. All acts and parts of acts in conflict with this act are hereby
repealed.
3. An emergency existing, this act shall be in force from its pas-
sage.
