Whereas, George Washington was one of the promoters of the Dis-
mal Swamp Canal chartered in seventeen hundred and eighty-seven,
which included a roadway along its banks, and
Whereas, he surveyed the said canal; was one of the first subscribers
to the stock, and the organizer of the Dismal Swamp Land Company
in the vicinity of this highway, which is in existence today; now there-
ore,
1.* Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That that
part of route number twelve of the State highway system as established
by an act approved January thirty-first, nineteen hundred and eighteen,
and acts amendatory thereof leading from Portsmouth via Craddock,
and Deep creek, paralleling Dismal Swamp canal to the North Caro-
lina line, is hereby designated, and shall be hereafter known as the
“George Washington highway.”
