Chap. 342.—An ACT to authorize the board of supervisors of Mathews county to
purchase, maintain and operate as a public ferry the ferry now in falar
tween the mainland and Gwynns Island in the said county. [fH B 306]
- Approved March 20, 1924.
1. Beit enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the board
of supervisors of Mathews county be, and it is hereby, authorized and
empowered to purchase the private ferry now in operation between the
mainland and Gwynns Island in the county of Mathews, and to operate
and maintain the same as a public ferry under the supervision, owner-
ship and control of the said county. The title to the said ferry, and to
any other property purchased and used in the necessary operation
thereof, shall be taken in the name of the county of Mathews, and the
said ferry shall be maintained and operated by the said county in ac-
cordance with such rules and regulations as may be adopted by the said
board; but the rates of ferriage prescribed, if any, shall be subject to
the approval of the circuit court of the county of Mathews.
2: The said board of supervisors is authorized to pay, out of the
county treasury, a fair and reasonable price for the said ferry, such price
to be subject to the approval of the circuit court of the said county.
The board of supervisors is further authorized, in their discretion, to
provide for the future maintenance and operation of the said ferry,
either by an annual appropriation from the revenue derived therefrom,
or by aspecial annual levy. Any revenue derived from the operation of
the ferry which is not so used may be appropriated to such county pur-
poses as the board of supervisors may prescribe.
3. An emergency existing, this act shall be in force from its passage.
