Chap. 72.—An ACT to appropriate the additional sum of not exceeding
$350,000 to carry out the purposes of an act approved March 19, 1922,
entitled “An act to provide for the erection of a fireproof State office
building, and the assignments of offices therein”; and also to make pro-
vision for the heating, lighting and power equipment of the said
building, and sanitary improvements in the library building for the
supreme court of appeals. [H B 20]
Approved March 28, 1923.
Whereas, by an act approved March tenth, nineteen hundred
and twenty-two, entitled “An act to provide for the erection of
a fire-proof State office building, and the assignment of offices
therein,” the board of building commissioners thereby created
was directed to cause to be erected, with all reasonable dispatch,
upon the site named in the act, a complete fire-proof State office
building. limiting its cost, however, to seven hundred and fifty
thousand dollars; and,
Whereas, the said act, in section three thereof, contains the
further provision that “‘said building shall contain sufficient ac-
commodations for all existing State departments, officers, boards
and commissions, and such as may be reasonably expected to be
added during at least the next decade due to the development
and enlargement of the State’s activities’; and,
Whereas, it has been ascertained by the board of building
commissioners that a building such as is described in the act
cannot be erected at an expenditure of seven hundred and fifty
thousand dollars, but that an approximation of it will cost three
hundred and fifty thousand dollars additional; and,
Whereas, it has been further ascertained that a substantial
sum will be saved if several stories be added to the building while
in process of construction instead of later (which would have to
be done if the purposes for which the said building is being
erected are to be carried out) ; now, therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
there be, and is hereby, appropriated to the State office building
construction fund, created by section four of the act aforesaid,
the additional sum of three hundred and fifty thousand dollars,
which sum, or so much thereof as may be necessary, shall be
expended to carry out the purposes of the said act, and to pro-
vide also for the heating, lighting and power equipment of the
said building; and out of any moneys then remaining in said
fund unexpended, the board of building commissioners shall
have authority to expend not exceeding fifteen hundred dollars
for sanitary improvements in the library building for the
supreme court of appeals. The sum hereby appropriated shall be
paid out of any moneys in the State treasury not otherwise ap-
propriated in the manner provided by section five of the act
aforesaid. |
2. An emergency existing, this act shall be in force from
its passage.
