Chap. 32.-An ACT to amend and re-enact an act approved February 7, 1918,
entitled an act to amend and re-enact section 26 of an act entitled an act to
amend sections 16, 21, 23, 26 and 28, of the charter of Suffolk, approved
February 3, 1888. [H B 31]

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That an
act approved February seventh, nineteen hundred and eighteen,
entitled “an act to amend and re-enact section twenty-six of an act
entitled an act to amend sections sixteen, twenty-one, twenty-three,
twenty-six and twenty-eight of the charter of Suffolk, -approved
February third, eighteen hundred and eighty-eight,” be amended
and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
Sec. 26. The city treasurer shall give bond in such sum, not
less than fifty thousand dollars, as the council may prescribe, with
surety to be approved by the council, conditioned upon the faithful
discharge of his duties. He shall receive from the city sergeant all
fines collected’ by him and shall collect and receive all city taxes,
levies, dues and pecuniary demands, and for that purpose shall be
vested with any and all powers which are now or may hereafter
be vested in such city treasurer as collector of State taxes. He
shall be the custodian of ail public money of the city and of all other
money coming into his hands as city treasurer. He shall disburse
the funds of the city except those to the credit of the public schools,
which shall be disbursed as prescribed by general law, according to
the rules and regulations prescribed by the council. He shall per-
form such other duties, have such powers and be liable to such
penalties as are now or many hereafter be prescribed by law or ordi-
nance. For such services the city treasurer shall receive such com-
pensation as the council may from time to time prescribe by ordi-
nance.
2. An emergency existing, this act shall be in force from its
passage. :
