Chap. 298.—An ACT to require able-bodied persons over sixteen years of age
to support their parents in cities of one hundred thousand inhabitants or
more. (H B 329]
Approved March 19, 1920.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That in
cities of one hundred thousand inhabitants or more it shall be the
duty of all able-bodied persons sixteen years of age, or over, of
sufficient earning capacity or income, to provide or assist in providing
for the support and maintenance of his or her mother or aged or infirm
father, he or she being then and there in destitute or necessitous
circumstances.
2. Any person violating the provisions of this act shall be guilty
of a misdemeanor and on conviction thereof shall be punished by a
fine not exceeding five hundred dollars or imprisonment in jail for
a period not exceeding twelve months, or both.
3. In cities where such courts shall be established, the juvenile
and domestic relations court shall have exclusive original jurisdiction
in all cases arising under this and the preceding sections. The person
accused shall have the same right of appeal as provided by law in
other cases. __
4. All proceedings under this act shall conform as nearly as pos-
sible to the proceedings under chapter eighty, Code of Virginia, and
the provisions of that chapter shall apply to cases arising under this
act in like manner as though they were incorporated herein. ©
