Chap. 169.—An ACT to amend and re-enact an act entitled an act to provide a
new charter for the city of Portsmouth, approved March 10, 1918, as amended
by an act approved March 12, 1912, and subsequently amended, by adding a
new chapter thereto, to be known as chapter 11, relating to the compen-
sation of the mayor and councilmen. | [H B 96]

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That an act
entitled an act to provide a new charter for the city of Portsmouth,
approved March tenth, nineteen hundred and eight, as amended by an
act approved March twelfth, nineteen hundred and twelve, and subse-
quently amended, be amended and re-enacted so as to add to said
charter a chapter to be known as chapter eleven, as follows:
Chapter 11, section 1. The city council, out of the general funds
of the city, shall grant and pay to each member of said council, includ.
ing the mayor, elected or appointed under or in pursuance of an act
entitled an act to provide for change in the form of government of
cities having a population of less than one hundred thousand, and of!
towns, and to provide in what manner such cities and towns maj
adopt such form of government, approved March twentieth, nineteer
hundred and sixteen, and subsequently amended, an annual compen.
sation of six hundred dollars.
Zz. An emergency existing by reason of the fact that the election o:
councilmen will take place in April, nineteen hundred and twenty, thi:
bill shall be in effect from its passage.
