Chap. 239.—An ACT to dedicate as and for a public street or highway, upon
certain conditions, a strip of land composing the southeast corner of
the capitol square, not excecding 11 fcet 4 inches at the point of its
greatest width. (Ss. :

Whereas, the southeastern corner of the capitol square is
bounded by Bank and Twelfth streets of the city of Richmond;
and,
Whereas, the present grade of Bank and Twelfth street at their
intersection is not merely unsightly, but extremely difficult for ani-.
mals and for travel; and,
Whereas, the only way in which said grade can be remedied and
made fit for purposes of use and travel, is to dedicate for such pur-
poses a small strip of land composing the extreme southeastern
corner of the capitol square; and, ;
Whereas, the dedication herein proposed will also add tp the
beauty of the square itself; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the small strip or parcel of land now composing the extreme south-
eastern corner of the capitol square be, and the same is hereby
dedicated as and for street or highway purposes, upon the following
express conditions and stipulations, namely:
First. The said strip or parcel of land hereby dedicated is that
strip or parcel of land now forming the extreme southeastern corner
of the capitol square and contained within the present boundaries
of said southeastern corner of the square and a curve line beginning
at a point on the Twelfth street line of the square fifty (50) feet
from the intersection of the west line of Twelfth street and the
north line of Bank street, and drawn with a radius of fifty (50)
feet, becoming tangent to the north side of Bank street fifty (50)
feet from the intersection of the north side of Bank street and the
west side of Twelfth street, the said strip or parcel of land not to
exceed eleven feet four inches at the point of its greatest width or
depth, which shall be opposite the center of the said present south-
eastern entrance to the capitol square. But for a more particular
and exact description of the strip or parcel of land hereby dedicated,
reference is made to a blue print made by the city engineer of the
city of Richmond, Virginia, and on file in the office of the register
of the land office, and to the map thereof on file in the office of the
said city engineer, marked “Plan of the northwestern corner of
Twelfth and Bank streets,” showing the portion to be acquired from
the capitol square for cutting off of corner, location of proposed
entrance, lines of coping and curbing.

Second. That the city of Richmond shall, within six months
from the passage of this act, by a proper ordinance, accept the said
dedication upon the terms and conditions herein contained, and shall
make the necessary appropriation to improve and make available,
for public use, the said strip or parcel of land as a part of said
streets, and shall bear all the expense thereof.
Third. That such improvements shall be in accordance with
plans and specifications approved by the governor of Virginia, and.
shall include the removal and restoration of the present gateway
or southeastern entrance to the square, and the enclosure of the
square itself so far as same shall be disturbed, along the new lines
established by virtue of this act.
Fourth. All material that is used in and about making improve-
ments and restoration authorized and required by this act shall be
satisfactory to the superintendent of grounds and buildings, and the
work shall be done under his supervision.
