Chap. 208.—An ACT to add independent section 1l-a to an act approved
March 12, 1912, entitled an act to amend and re-enact an act of the
general assembly, approved March 4, 1894, entitled an act to provide for
the working and keeping in order the public roads of the counties of
Greene and Madison, as amended by act approved May 14, 1903, so far
as the same applies to Madison county, so ag to provide for the opening.
construction, maintaining and working the roads, and keeping in order
the causeways and bridges of Madison and Greene counties, and creating
the office of sunerintendent of roads, and prescribing hig duties and
compensation, and repeal any act in conflict herewith. (H. B. 66.)

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia. That
an act entitled an act to amend and re-enact an act of the general
assembly. approved March fourth, eighteen hundred and _ninety-
four, entitled an act to provide for the working and keening in
order the public roads of the counties of Greene and Madison. as
amended by act anproved May fourteenth. nineteen hundred and
three. so far as the same applies to Madison county. so as to
provide for the opening. construction, maintaining, and working
the roads, and keeping in order the causeways and bridges of
Madison and Greene counties, and creating the office of sunerinten-
dent of roads. and prescribing his duties and compensation. and
repeal any act in conflict herewith be amended and re-enacted by
adding thereto section eleven-a, as follows:
Sec. l1-a. At the terms of circuit court for Greene county and
Madison county, respectively. next preceding the first day of May.
in the vear nineteen hundred and sixteen, and in each fourth year
thereafter, it shall be the duty of the iudge of said court to appoint
a superintendent of roads for each of said counties for a like term
of office, to begin on the first day of Mav following such apnoint-
ment. and to continue for a period of four years and until the
oualification of his successor or successors: provided. that if the
judge of said court in any such vear should be satisfied that, in
either or each of said counties. one suverintendent is not
sufficient for the adequate performance of the duties imnosed by
said act of March twelfth, nineteen hundred and twelve. then
said jjudge may, for each or either of said counties. appoint a
superintendent of reads for each magisterial district of. such
county, with like duties and powers. except the power to appoint
a deputy. as is provided for in said act of March the twelfth
nineteen hundred and twelve, in which event the compensation of
the superintendent of roads. as fixed bv section ten of said act.
shall be apportioned eauallv between such district superintendents.
and all the other provisions of said act shall be adjusted! and
applied correspondingly.
