Chap. 150.—An ACT to provide for the election of United States senators by
a direct vote ofi the people in accordance with the amendments to the
Constitution of the United States. (H. B. 351.)
Approved March 20, 1914.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
United States senators in the congress of the United States for the
State of Virginia shall be hereafter elected by a direct vote of the
people, and vacancies occurring in such office shall be filled in
accordance with the first paragraph of section three of article one
of the Constitution of the United States, as amended.
2. At the general election held in November next preceding
the expiration of the term of office of United States senators for
Virginia in the congress of the United States, a successor to such
United States senator shall be elected by the people in like manner,
and in accordance with the law requiring the election of governor
and other State officers. At such election the candidate receiving
the highest number of votes shall be declared elected, and shall be
duly commissioned by the governor for the term of six years next
following the expiration of, the term of office of the senator whom
such person is elected to succeed.
3. When any vacancy shall occur in the representation of the
State of Virginia in the United States senate, the governor of this
State shall issue writ of election to fill such vacancy, said election
to be held at the next succeeding November election; provided, that
the governor shall make a temporary appointment to fill such
vacancy until such election is held to fill such vacancy, as required
under this act.
