Chap. 241.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 2 of an act entitled “an act to
provide for the appointment of police justices, and their jurisdiction in cities
of a population of ten thousand and over, in which, by the terms of their char-
ters, no provision is made for the election or appointment of police justices,”
approved December 31, 1903.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That section
two of an act to provide for the appointment of police justices and their
jurisdiction in cities of a population of ten thousand andi over, in which,
by the terms of their charters, no provision is made for the election
or appointment of police justices, approved thirty-first of December,
nineteen hundred and three, be amended and re-enacted so as to read as
ollows : :
2. The first appointment under the provisions of this act shall be
made in the month of April, nineteen hundred and four, and the police
justices first appointed shall enter upon the discharge of their duties
on the first day of May, nineteen hundred and four, and their succes-
sors shall be appointed in like manner, in the month of January, nine-
teen hundred and eight, and every four years thereafter, and the terms
of their office shall commence on the first day of February next, suc-
ceeding their arnointment: provided, that where no appointmerft has
been made, as above nrovided, the same may be made by the corporation
or hustings court, or the judge thereof in vacation, within thirty days
after the passage of this act, and the terms of office of the first ap-
pointed shall commence immediately upon his appointment and qualifi-
cation, and expire on the first day of February, nineteen hundred and
eight, and the successors of any such appointee shall be appointed as
above prescribed.
8. An emergency existing therefor, this act shall be in force from its
passage.
