CHAP. 254.—An ACT to incorporate the order of Jamestown, 1607.
Approved February 16, 1901.
L. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That Alfred M.
Randolph, of Virginia; C. Kinlock Nelson, of Georgia; William I.
Roberts, of Williamsburg, Virginia, and such others as may hereafter be
associated with them, their successors and assigns, be, and hereby are,
incorporated and made a body, politic and incorporate, under the name
and style of “The Order of Tamestown, 1607,” and by that name and
style shall have perpetual succession and a common seal, which it may
amend and alter at pleasure, and may sue and be sued, contract and he
contracted with, and be generally invested with all the rights and privi-
leges appertaining to incorporated companies under the laws of the state
of Virginia and of the United States, and subject to the restrictions now
imposed upon such corporations by the general assembly of the state.
2. The said company shall have all powers they can exercise in such
manner as they may choose to carry out the objects of their organization,
which are as follows: First, to awaken interest in the beginnings of the
Episcopal church in this land. Second, to erect a suitable memorial to
the memory of the Reverend Robert Hunt, the apostle of the American
Episeopal church, who began the first permanent services on this conti-
nent according to the hook of common prayer; celebrated the first com-
munion; officiated at the first baptism, and first read the office for the
burial of the dead. Third, to restore and improve Bruton parish church,
at Williamsburg, Virginia, which is the successor of the Jamestown
church, and which has inherited its font and communion silver, and
within which parish Jamestown island is situated.
3. The following are the officers of the above-named corporation until
their successors shall be duly elected under such by-laws as may be made
by said society for its own government—viz: Right Reverend Alfred M.
Randolph, bishop of southern Virginia, honorary president: Right Rev-
erend (. Kinloch Nelson, bishop of Georgia, honorary vice-president;
Reverend William T. Roberts, rector of Bruton church, Williamsburg.
Virginia, president; Mistress William T. Roberts, of Williamsburg, Vir-
ginia, secretary and treasurer, with the following associates: Reverend
George S. Bennett, D. D., Reverend Joseph Carey, D. D., Reverend
Cameron Mann, D. D., Reverend William M. Jeffries, D. D., George C
Burgyin, esquire, H. D. Cole and R. T. Armistead, esquires.
