Chap. 157.—An ACT to incorporate the nurses settlement.
Appreved February 14, 1901.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That Miss E.
R. P. Cocke, Miss R. Parkins, Miss A. Gully, Miss L. V. Moore, Miss F.
L. Perry, Miss L. A. Hennighaussen, Miss N. J. Minor, Miss S. H.
Cabaniss, Miss Celeste Berry, and Mistress S. L. Bloomberg, and such
other persons as are now, or may be hereafter, associated with them,
are hereby declared to be a body, politic and corporate, by the name,
style, and title of “the nurses settlement,” and by that name shall be
known in law, and shall have perpetual succession and a common seal,
with right to change the same at pleasure, and shall have the power to
sue and be sued, contract and be contracted with, plead and be impleaded,
and have all the rights and privileges that corporations usually enjoy, and
e subject to all the rules, regulations, and restrictions, and do all acts
nd enjoy all powers incident to similar corporations in general, under
nd subject to the laws of this commonwealth.
The chief office of the said corporation shall be in the city of Richmond,
irginia. °
2. That the purposes of the said “nurses settlement” shall be to provide
home for trained nurses, to provide free classes for instruction in home
ursing for the sick, to establish and maintain an organization which
ill supply to the sick poor without charge, at their homes or elsewhere,
1e services of trained and skilled nurses and physicians, and for such
ier purposes as are incident to those specially enumerated.
3. That the members of said corporation, who are or may be entitled
» vote in any election of officers, shall have full power and authority to
ake and adopt a constitution and by-laws, and to prescribe rules and
‘culations for the government of said corporation, and the promotion of
3 interests, and for the admission and expulsion of members, and from
me to time to amend and alter the same at pleasure: provided, that the
ime be not inconsistent with the constitution and laws of the United
tates and of the state of Virginia.
+. That the officers of the said corporation shall consist of a president
nd such others as may be deemed necessary, who shall be elected as the
onstitution and by-laws shall prescribe.
5. That the corporation may take and acquire by purchase, gift, devise,
equest, or otherwise, both real and personal estate, and may hold, lease,
ent, sell, encumber, or otherwise dispose of the same: provided, that the
nid property, or the income derived from the same, shall be used exclu-
ively for the purposes of the said corporation: and provided further,
hat the said corporation shall not hold at any one time, real estate of
reater value than one hundred thousand dollars.
6. That the said nurses settlement, being purely benevolent and char-
table, shall be exempt from payment of all taxes, state and municipal.
