Chap. 13.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 20 of an act entitled an
act to repeal the charter of the town of Smithfield and to grant a new
charter to the said town, which took effect February 17, 1900.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of the State of Virginia, That
section twenty of an act entitled an act to repeal the charter of the town
of Smithfield, and to grant a new charter to the said town, which took
effect February seventeen, nineteen hundred, be amended and re-enacted
so as to read as follows:
§ 20. All taxable persons and property in the said town shall be free
and exempt from the payment of any poor rates and road levy, except so
much of the said levy as may be necessary for the building and mainte-
nance of bridges, levied in any year by the county of Isle of Wight for
county purposes: provided, the said town shall, at its own expense, pro-
vide for its own poor and keep its streets in order.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
