Chap. 324.—An ACT to amend section TL of an aet entitled an act. to
establish a System of District Free Schools for King George County.
Passed February 28, 1866.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That section
eleven of an act entitled an act to establish a system of' dis-
trict free schools for King George county be amended and
re-enacted so as to read as follows
“$11. Be it further enacted, That a fund for the purpose
of this act, to be called the “school fund” of the county of
King George, to be under the control and management of
the board of school commissioners, and to be appropriated
by them for the school purposes of the county alone, shall
be raised as follows: First, by the quota of the literary fund
to which the county is entitled, and any other amount that
may be allowed by the commonwealth to the said county, to
be paid to the treasury of the said board of school commis-
sioners by a warrai, on the treasury, of the proper officer ;
second, by the interest’ upon the glebe fund of said county,
to be paid annually to the treasurer of the said board; third,
by such fines and forfeitures as shall accrue under this act :
fourth, by such donations, bequests and devises as may from
time to time be made to the school commissioners for school
purposes; fifth, by a tuition fee not exceeding eight dollars
per annum, to be paid by the parents or ouardians of all chil-
dren attending the schools established by this act; the amount
of such tuition fee (within the limit aforesaid) to be fixed by
the board of school commissioners, according to the ability
of the parent or guardian to pay: provided, that no tuition
fee be demanded of those who, in the opinion of the said
board, are unable to pay the same: and provided also, that
no child shall be excluded on account of the nonpayment of
said fees; sixth, by a tax upon each white male citizen of the
county over the ave of sixteen vears, of one dollar: and if a
larger sum, than shall be raised by the means aforesaid, be
necessary for the purposes of this act, then, seventh, by an
assessment not excecding fifty per centum on the amount
imposed by law for state revenue, on all subjects of taxation
paying state revenue in the county, except upon law process,
seals of courts, deeds, probates of wills and letters of admin-
istration, to be assessed and levied by the board of school
commissioners upon all such subjects of taxation and upon
such persons in the county in equal proportions, to be col-
lected as provided for hy this act: provided, tbat license
to merchants, ordinary keepers and keepers of houses of pri-
vate entertainment shall pay a school tax not exceeding ten
per centum of that imposed by law for state revenue: and
to enable the school commissioners to make such assessment
and levy, the clerk of the court shall deliver to the board of
school commissioners, at ‘their meetings for examination, a
copy of the land and property books of the county in his
possession, up to the latest date, which, after examination,
shall be returned by the board to the clerk: and provided
further, that this section shall be submitted to the people of
the county of King George, in mode prescribed by the six-
teenth section of the eighth of March aforesaid: and the re-
turns of the vote and the period when this amended section
shall take effect, shall be as prescribed by said sixteenth
section.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
