Chap. 291.—An ACT to ineorporate the Sun Fire Company of the City of
Alexandria,
7 Paasced February 21, 1866.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That Hugh La-
tham, John Rudd, Hiram Webster, James P. Coleman, Miller
Glasgow, John Mitchell and Francis Pow er be and they are
hereby incorporated and made a body corporate and politic,
under the name and style of The Sun Fire Company of
Alexandria; and shall have power to perform all duties
usually devolved upon fire companies generally; to meet and
assemble together, at such time or times as may be agreed
upon, and aid in arresting and extinguishing fires in the city
and suburbs of Alexandria; and shall, by that name, have
succession; and shall be able to sue and be sued, plead and
be impleaded, in all the courts of this state.
2. It shall be competent for the aforesaid persons to call a
mecting of the voluntary association, called the Sun fire
company of Alexandria, who shall constitute the members of
the company hereby incorporated, at any time, by public
notice of two weeks, in one of the newspapers published in
the city of Alexandria, of the time and place of meeting,
who shall have authority to elect, from among themselves, a
president and such other officers as they may deem necessary,
under rules and regulations to be adopted by them, who shall
hold their respective offices for a period of one year from
the time of their election; and thereafter, at a yearly meet-
ing, their successors in office shall be appointed in like manner,
and tor the same period.
3. That the company may purchase and hold real estate in
the city of Alexandria, not exceeding in dimension five
thousand square teet, tor the purpose of erecting thereon
suitable buildings for their apparatus and place of meeting.
4. That the company shall have authority to adopt by-laws
for their government, not inconsistent with this act or the
laws and constitution of the state.
5. This act shall be in force from its passage, and shall be
subject to alteration, amendment or repeal, at the pleasure of
the general assembly.
