Chap. 247.—An ACT to incorporate the Mount Vernon Company.
Passed February 9, 1866.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
Wellington Goddin. George E. Pickett, Joseph F. Powell,
George W. Smith, Robert Werne, and their associates and
SUCCESSOrS, OF a majority of them, are hereby created and
constituted a body politic and corporate, by the name and
style of The Mount, Vernon Company; for the purpose of
holding and possessing real estate and other property in the
state of Virginia, and of mining, transporting, manufacturing
and selling coal, iron and other minerals and metals; and by
that name and style, shall have perpetual succession : may
contract and be contracted with; sue and be sued, plead and
be impleaded, in all courts; have a common seal, and all the
rights and privileges of a corporation.
2. That the capital stock of said company shaJl not be less
than two hundred thousand dollars nor more than one mil-
lion of dollars, to be divided into shares of one hundred dol-
lars each; and the said capital may be inereased to the limit
aforesaid, from time to time, by the directors of the company.
3. That the company shall have the authority to tix the
number of and appoint its directors; to make such by-laws
and regulations, from time to time. as it may deem necessary
or proper for the management of its atfairs; and may hold
its meetings in the city of Richmond or clsewhere, as the
said company may from time to time elect.
4. That the company may hold lands in the counties of
Washington, Smyth, Wythe, Grayson, Carroll, Floyd, Mont-
gomery, Argusta, Nelson, Buckingham, Prince Edward, Spot-
sylvania, Henrico, Fauquier and Warren, not exceeding, at
any one time, three thousand acres in any one county; may
construct railroads, with the consent of the owners of the
lands through which such roads may pass, connecting said
company’s lands with any railroad now or hereafter estal-
lished by law; and may own and employ canal boats and
seagoing vessels.
5. This act shall take effect from and after its passage, and
shall be subject to amendment, modification or repeal, at the
pleasure of the gencral assembly.
