Chap. 243.—An ACT to incorporate the Catawba Coal and Iron Company.
Passed December 18, 1865.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That John F.
Tanner, O. I. Bresee and Archibald Bolling, and such per-
sons as may hereafter be associated with them, shall be and
they are hereby incorporated and made a body politic and
corporate, for the purpose of mining for coal and other min-
erals, and manufacturing iron and materials in the county of
Botetourt, and selling and disposing of such portions of thajr
property, and taking stock in other companies, as they may
think advisable, under the name and style of The Catawba
Coal and Iron Company: and they are hereby invested with
all the rights, privileges and powers conferred on such bodies
politic and corporate, by an act entitled an act prescribing
general regulations for the incorporation of manufacturing
and mining companies, passed February the thirteenth, eigh-
teen hundred and thirty-seven, with such amendments as
have been made subsequently, and are hereby made subject
to the restrictions and regulations of said act and amendments.
2. Be it further enacted, That the capital stock of said
company shall not be less than one hundred thousand dol-
lars nor more than one million dollars, and shall be divided
into shares of one hundred dollars each: and the said com-
pany shall have the right to hold lands in the county of Bote-
tourt, not exceeding twenty thousand acres.
3. Be it further enacted, That the said Catawba coal and
iron company shall have the authority to construct a railroad
from said property to the line of the James river and Ka-
nawha canal, or to the Virginia and Tennessee railroad, over
such ground as they may deem best suited for said road, but
not without the consent of the owners of the ground over
which the railroad is to pass; and to receive subscriptions
from individuals and corporations to the said railroad.
4. This act shall be in force from its passage.
