Chap. 160.—An ACT incorporating the Town of Port Republic. in the
County of Rackinghaus
Passed January 29, 1565.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That the town
of Port R epublic, in the county of Rockingham, as the same
has heretofore been laid off, or may hereafter be laid off into
lots, streets and alleys, and within the following boundaries:
Beginning at the confluence of South river and North river ;
thence, up sad North river, with the meanderings thereof,
crossing Back street, to a stone, John W, Palmer’ 8 corner ;
thence, “with the west line of said Back str ect, including Car-
thrae’s addition to said town, extended, in a straicht line
through the farm of John W. Palmer, er ossing the Harrison-
burg road, to a stone on the line of George W. Kemper, se-
nior; thence, with said IXemper’s line, to I<emper's dr rain, 2
branch of South river; thence, with said drain and South
river, to the beginning—shall be and the same is her eby made
a town corporate, by the name of The Town of Port Re-
public; aud by that name, shall have and exercise the powers
conferred upon towns by the fifty-fourth chapter of the Code
of Virginia of the year e eighteen hundred and sixty, and be
subject’ to all the provisions of the said Code. so far as the
same are not inconsistent with the provisions of this act.
2. The officers of said town shall consist of a mayor, ser-
geant and five councilmen, who shall be elected by the voters
of said town qualified to vote for members of the general
assembly, who shall hold their offices for one year, and until
their successors are elected and qualified.
3. The sheriff of Rockingham county, or one of his depu-
ties, is hereby required to hold an election in said town, at
such place as he may select, on the ‘last Saturday in March,
eighteen hundred and sixty-six, for the officers aforesaid,
agreeably to the aforesaid chapter of the Code of Virginia;
and elections for the officers aforesaid shall be held annually
on the same day, unless the ordinances or by-laws of said
town shall otherwise direct.
4. This act shall be in force from.its passage.
