Chap. 141.—An ACT to provide for a High Constable for the City of
Portstnonth.
Passed Fe ‘bruary 7 , 1566.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
there shall be a high constable for the city of Portsmouth,
instead of the constables for said city now provided for by
law, who shall be elected by the voters of said city at the
same time, hold his office for the same term, and have in all
respects the same rights, powers and duties, and be subject
to the same liabilities and penalties, as provided in reference
to said constables. The high constable shall, before entering
upon the duties of his office, enter into bond ‘before the court
of hustings of said city, with good security, in a penalty, to
pe fixed by the said court, of not less than ten thousand dol-
ars, payable to the commonwealth, and conditioned for the
aithtul discharge of the duties of his office. .He may, with
he consent of the court of hustings, appoint not more than
w6 deputies, who may be removed at his pleasure.
2. All acts and parts of acts inconsistent with this act, are.
ereby repealed.
8. This act shall be in force from its passage.
